So I lost my Panasonic Lumix LX-3. I think it fell out of my hoodie pocket coming back from Fire Island last weekend. Sorta sad since I’ve had that camera for three years and have taken it with me everywhere. To replace the LX-3 I bought an Olympus PEN E-PL3. I’m hoping with the PEN I’ll have the portability of the LX-3 but better image quality with a larger sensor. I like what I see so far.

Playing with the teleconverters. These photos are JPEGs straight from the camera (except for the unzoomed one, which has been modified to show the area of interest. The zoom shows a building in downtown Corpus Christi, about 10.23 miles away from the camera. It was a pretty windy day, so there is some shake, even though I was using a tripod. The pictures show no zoom on the first one. 12x optical zoom on the FZ7, then the 16.5x EZ (extended optical zoom). Following that the same two zooms are shown, but with a 2x teleconverter, a 3x teleconverter, and then the 2x and 3x piggy-backed. These are cheap teleconverters, so there is some chromatic aberration, but all in all, they work pretty well.

Still some vignetting, but less than the last one. Look at the yellow in the houses… that should be white.

Timelapse Film featuring my hometown, the free city of Bremen/Germany Inspired by the awesome timelapses from Philip Bloom and Tom Lowe, I undertook this summer my own first steps into timelapse cinematography. As always Philip Bloom’s video tutorials were of great help, to become familiar with the workflow. Encouraged by the initial results, I continued shooting sequences. With footage piling up, the idea of a timelapse shortfilm about Bremen took shape. My goal was to show the new pieces of architecture, which have changed the perspective of our city in the last 10 years. Structural change has taken place a lot here. Coming from an industrial background Bremen’s economy turned towards a more science and service based direction. Lot’s of new buildings were the result. Places like the “Universum”, the “Drop Tower” and the “Oversea City” business district now shape a more modern skyline. Especially at night – illuminated with tungsten light, these buildings really shine. Since the nature of this project was non-commerical and the nights are short in the summer, progress was very slow at first. Best time of the year is probably autumn: Not to cold but getting dark not too late. As always autumn passes much too fast and an early winter stopped my shooting activities abruptly. I would have liked to shoot more and try some new ideas, but this has to wait until next year. So this is it, my first timelapse project. Hope you enjoy watching!
